Welcome to Supporting Student Athletes, a dedicated space providing resources and support for student athletes, sharing athlete testimony, research and proposed solutions for athletes to have more well rounded college experiences. 

30 + hours per week - The average amount of an athletic time commitment (practice, meetings, travel)

15 Credits - Full Time academic workload

7 hours - Minimum recommended hours of sleep for young adults

Our Goal

Our goal is to support student athletes by providing research, proposed solutions and hearing student athletes stories to help bring awareness and address the issue of overscheduling of collegiate athletes.  

Essays

In this space, we share stories and essays that examine the need for institutional protections for student athletes.  Stories examine topics such as overscheduling, mental health, and the physical effects of proper sleep and nutriotion. 

Research Summary: Sleep, Injury and Mental Health in College Athletes

This essay synthesizes research on sleep deprivation, injury risk, and mental health among student athletes - concluding that overscheduled athletes face higher injury rates, poorer academic performance, and greater mental health challenges. The conclusion recommends scheduling limits, rest windows and more supportive policies from universities.
